Ensuring proper nutrition for a child helps build a steady foundation for life. Nutrition begins from the moment a child is born through breastfeeding or formula.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding because it is important for optimal infant and child health and development. Balanced formulas can be substituted when breastfeeding is not possible.

Once a child begins to eat solid food, it is important to provide him with a variety of foods in moderation. America is experiencing a growing problem with obesity because often times children do not learn that food can be consumed in excess. That is why it is a valuable life skill for parents to teach children about balanced foods as well as eating in moderation.

For optimal health, children need to:

  • Be physically active every day.
  • Choose healthy foods from the six food groups: grains, vegetables, fruits, oils, milk, meat and beans.
  • Eat foods from all food groups every day.
  • Eat more grains, vegetables and fruits than oils, meats and beans.
